Village homes, new builds and farmhouses.
Rockwood is a small village on the Eramosa River, known for the limestone cliffs of the conservation area. Its homes range from older houses in the village core, to newer subdivisions on the edges of town, to farmhouses and country homes on larger lots across the township.
- Older village homes. Kitchens built around original walls and windows, where cabinets made to measure fit the room instead of fighting it.
- Newer subdivisions. Open layouts where builder grade cabinets are replaced with an island sized to the room and a full pantry wall.

Planning a kitchen outside the city.
Many homes around Rockwood are on a private well. Well water is often hard and can carry iron, so there may be a softener, an iron filter or a drinking water system to allow for. We plan the sink cabinet around any equipment that sits there and leave access to the valves.
Homes on a septic system need a little thought at the sink too. Many septic professionals advise against a garbage disposal, so check with yours, and we will plan the sink base either way.
Rockwood is part of the Township of Guelph/Eramosa, so building permits come from the township rather than a city. New cabinets in the same layout do not usually need one, but removing a load bearing wall or moving plumbing usually does, and we flag that at the estimate.
Designing a bigger kitchen.
A larger country kitchen gives you options a city kitchen does not, and a few decisions matter more because of the size.
- Island size. A big island is the centre of the room, but past a certain length it needs a seam in the top or a split into two, so we size it with the counter in mind.
- Walking distance. In a large room, the sink, stove and fridge should still sit close together so cooking does not mean crossing the kitchen.
- Pantry or cabinets. A walk in pantry holds bulk shopping out of sight, while pantry cabinets keep everything within reach of the counter.
- Farmhouse details. Shaker doors, a farmhouse sink base, open shelves and a statement range hood suit the style.
